What is the difference between Bridge Mode and Route (or Router) Mode?

In Router Mode your DSL modem will operate as a firewall protecting your computer from intrusion from outside your internal network. ISP supplied DSL modems are very inexpensive and therefore do not contain sufficient resources to protect more than 1 or 2 computers. Connecting more than 1 or 2 computers to your DSL modem may cause computers to intermittently disconnect from the internet or respond slowly.

In Bridge Mode the internet firewall is disabled allowing traffic to flow much more quickly. In this mode customers must connect a separate router. Most consumer based routers contain as much as 10 times the resources of a consumer grade DSL modem offered by most DSL providers.

Relieving your DSL modem of the burden of protecting your network from intrusion and adding a dedicated router with more resources will resolve most DSL related connection issues improving both speed and call quality.

How do I change my DSL Modem from Route Mode to Bridge Mode?

Please contact your ISP, a qualified network technician or advanced instruction manual for your DSL modem for more information.

My DSL modem is in Bridge Mode but my Music On Hold or other feature is still not working properly?

On rare occasion a DSL provider will prevent customers from disabling the internal firewall even in Bridge Mode. Customers who continue to experience communication failures after converting to Bridge Mode may have a malfunctioning internet connection or may need to purchase an upgraded DSL modem.

How do I purchase a DSL modem upgrade for my internet connection?

Yes. Please contact your ISP for a list of approved devices or a qualified network technician for assistance.
