How do I test DTMF touch tones on my phone?

Helix Telecom is happy to test the touch tone keys on any Helix Telecom provided phone but in an effort to simplify troubleshooting steps for our technicians we will only test using the following methods or organizations:

  • Dial 03863# from any Helix Telecom issued phone. You will be prompted to enter some digits followed by pound. The digits received will be read back to you to confirm the digits receive match what you entered.
  • Internal Revenue Service (dial 1-800-829-1040, press 4 from the main menu, wait to be transferred, enter your social security number slowly and clearly, confirm you entered your social security by pressing 1 and the system will read back the number you entered).
  • Wells Fargo Bank at 1-800-416-8658.
  • Chase Bank at 1-800-935-9935.
  • TMobile at 1-800-937-8997.

If you experience problems dialing other numbers then please submit a ticket. We are happy to investigate other numbers in an effort to resolve your issue.

What are some things I can do?

Here are some hints to help eliminate issues experienced using touch-tone menus:

  • press and hold each digit for at least 1 second (count “one-one-thousand”)
  • pause for a moment between each digit
  • confirm you are entering the correct digits
  • test the digits you are entering by dialing 03863# from your phone and following the prompts. This system will allow you to enter some digits and read them back to you to confirm the digits entered match what is being sent to the touch tone system you are dialing

What is DTMF?

DTMF stands for Dual-tone multi-frequency. This is the standard used by telecommunications companies to communicate the touch of a number on a caller's phone. DTMF is used by banks, financial institutions and automated attendants / IVRs to communicate information between the caller and the computer answering the phone.
